The Faculty of Sciences at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for an

Open Topic Tenure Track Professorship in the field of Data Science (W 1 / Assistant Professor)

at the newly founded Department of Data Science within the context of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria. The position is to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of three years. Upon successful evaluation, the appointment will be extended for another three years. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to a W 2 professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met.

We seek to appoint a top early career scientist who will develop outstanding expertise in the field. The ideal candidate is an outstanding, highly visible early career scientist with an independent research and teaching profile in the fundamentals of data science, for example, statistical modelling, mathematical foundations of machine learning, modern algorithms for data science, numerical analysis, harmonic analysis, mathematical analysis of large data sets, mathematics of edge computing, information geometry, or statistical manifolds. The Department of Data Science (DDS) is in its initial phase and offers a dynamic, collaborative structure for research into the fundamentals of data science and machine learning with challenging applications in the science and humanities with agile teams focusing on future-oriented, interdisciplinary research topics.

The professor will also be expected to teach students in the new bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in Data Science and participate in other degree programmes offered by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Data Science, as well as to offer academic events for students in other disciplines. Successful candidates demonstrate initial academic achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest international standards. You have substantial research experience abroad and/or experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and pertinent teaching experience are also prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are desired.
