The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

The digitalization of materials science offers a wide range of possibilities for optimizing manufacturing processes and testing methods. Especially methods of machine learning show great potential, e.g. for the prediction of material properties or the optimization of process parameters. BAM would like to develop a core competence in this area in order to continue to meet the requirements of a future-oriented and sustainable society.
In cooperation with other departments, methods of machine learning are developed and applied in the Section S.3 eScience. BAM offers a wide range of possible applications and ideal conditions for creative minds. Become part of our team of committed employees!

Your responsibilities include:

  • Processing of experimental data and integration of simulation data as well as development and selection of suitable features
  • Evaluation of machine learning methods (ML methods) for the prediction of material properties
  • Implementation of ML methods using existing frameworks
  • Extension of ML-methods, especially for the consideration of physical constraints
  • Visualization and interpretation of results from the predictions based on the ML methods
  • Documentation and provision of the developed software for users and other developers
  • Communication of research results at scientific conferences and in refereed journals
